BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Tonight starts on the clearer side for many before clouds reenter overnight. Only Southern Maine has a chance to see some snow/mixed precipitation by sunrise. Low temps vary throughout the 10s up North and 20s elsewhere. NE gusts peak at 15 mph. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect in Western and Southern Maine tonight until Monday morning.

Sunday will be the big hitting day of the weekend. Messy and wet conditions are likely for all. The stationary front which provided us with some snow in areas Saturday morning will reenter. The whole state will be under a Winter Weather Advisory from Sunday evening through Monday morning.

Snow is likely for the first few hours of the system on Sunday, passing through Southern Maine during the morning, the Bangor region during the early to midafternoon, and up North during the evening. Behind the snow is a larger pocket of warmer air, where sleet and freezing rain is expected. This will span across Maine, impacting Southern areas by midday, the Bangor region during the late afternoon/evening, and up North during the overnight. Consistent precipitation is likely once the system enters.

High temps on Sunday vary from the upper 20s to low 40s. SE wind gusts are expected up to 25 mph. Snow accumulation will be highest up in the rooftop of Maine, where 2-4 inches are expected. The I-95 corridor, Southern, Central, and Coastal Maine will see under 2 inches.

Ice accumulation is the biggest risk on Sunday. This risk will continue into Monday the farther North you go. A tenth to a quarter of an inch is possible, with the highest amounts in the Western Mountains and Central Highlands. Roads will be icy and slick Sunday night into Monday morning. Be careful on the morning commute Monday. A few downed power lines and trees are possible, but power outages are expected to be generally isolated and in small amounts.

Warm temperatures work in overnight so low temps will be about the same as Sunday’s highs. Temps continue to rise through Monday, with highs in the 40s to low 50s. This will help melt much of the ice that accumulated, so road conditions will be much better on the back half of Monday.

Monday morning will bring rain for most, while some mixed precipitation is still likely up North. Mixed precip will exit entirely by midday. Rain is on and off throughout Monday, before a cold front enters Monday evening, continuing overnight. Winds will pick up on Monday as well, with SSW gusts up to 35 mph.

The cold front is likely to linger into Tuesday morning for communities especially in Eastern and Northern Maine. Some snow/mixed precip is possible on the back end of the front for a few hours. We will provide updates on that as we move closer to the event for the Tuesday morning commute. After the front works through, clear skies are left behind so sunshine will finally return to the forecast Tuesday afternoon. High temps on Tuesday will vary from the low 30s to mid 40s. Winds remain strong, with NW gusts up to 30 mph.

Quieter and cooler conditions linger into Wednesday with partly to mostly sunny skies before more precipitation chances are expected to return to the forecast on Thursday. Thursday’s precip will likely start as snow in the morning, before transitioning to rain in the afternoon. Quiet and warmer weather in the 40s and 50s is expected Friday and Saturday.

SUNDAY: Messy day. Snow enters, turns over to sleet/freezing rain & then to rain. Highs from upper 20s to low 40s. SE gusts reach 25 mph. Winter Weather Advisory for all. MONDAY: Rain for most. Some mixed precip up North during AM. On and off rain during PM before cold front enters during evening. Highs from mid 40s to low 50s. SSW gusts reach 35 mph.

TUESDAY: Cold front lingers in Eastern/Northern Maine during AM. Snow/mixed precip possible. Sunnier skies return behind cold front. Highs from low 30s to mid 40s. NW gusts reach 30 mph.
